años potenciales de vida perdidos. Su frecuencia va en aumento. Unas pocas
localizaciones tumorales agrupan la mayoría de casos: colorectal, pulmón, mama,
próstata, estómago y otros.</FONT></SPAN></SPAN></P>

face=Arial>- El tabaquismo es la principal causa prevenible de cáncer. La
incidencia del cáncer de pulmón, el más habitual en los varones, se
correlaciona, con unos años de retraso, con la frecuencia del hábito tabáquico.
Debemos potenciar los esfuerzos para disminuir dicho hábito entre la
población.</FONT></SPAN></SPAN></SPAN></SPAN></P>

La atención a los pacientes con cáncer requiere la colaboración de todos,
sanitarios y no sanitarios. Los voluntarios de la AECC pueden desempeñar un
importante papel en la aceptación y adaptación a la enfermedad de los pacientes
y sus familias.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

El diagnóstico de cáncer supone un gran impacto para el paciente y su familia, y
conlleva un importante cambio en la forma de vivir y entender la
existencia.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

Actualmente el diagnóstico precoz del cáncer mediante cribados poblacionales es
poco efectivo en términos de disminución de mortalidad (incluso en el cáncer de
mama), no se correlaciona con las expectativas generadas y conlleva con
frecuencia la medicalización innecesaria de la población.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

La mayoría de pacientes con cáncer son diagnosticados en fase sintomática. Para
realizar un diagnóstico lo más temprano posible, ante síntomas sugerentes de
cáncer, es necesario una adecuada información a la población respecto a las
situaciones en las que se debe consultar al médico, una buena preparación de los
profesionales para sospecharlo y la suficiente agilidad diagnóstica del sistema
sanitario (para lo que es imprescindible una buena coordinación entre niveles y
servicios).<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

El tratamiento específico de los pacientes con cáncer debe contar con las
mejores pruebas científicas disponibles, y con las características y
preferencias del paciente.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

Para la atención a los pacientes oncológicos terminales se precisan amplios
conocimientos y habilidades técnicas, y unas buenas cualidades humanas. Los
pilares de una asistencia correcta se basan en el control de los síntomas (no
sólo físicos, sino psíquicos como la desesperanza, muy difíciles de combatir),
la comunicación y acompañamiento afectivo, la atención al cuidador (que suele
ser mujer) y el cuidado de los profesionales implicados. La muerte no debe ser
sentida como un fracaso y no deben darse falsas expectativas desde los servicios
sanitarios. Los cuidados paliativos deben asumirlos la atención primaria, con
los apoyos oportunos y necesarios, respetando siempre los deseos y preferencias
del paciente y su familia.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

Los pacientes con cáncer precisan habitualmente distintos tratamientos
farmacológicos. La participación de los farmacéuticos comunitarios en el proceso
de atención es necesaria.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

Los pacientes tienen mitos y creencias con relación al cáncer, que conviene
conocer. A veces utilizan medicinas alternativas, que es comprensible y debe
aceptarse, siempre que no interfieran con las actuaciones de la medicina basada
en pruebas.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

Los medios de comunicación juegan un importante papel como transmisores de
información, que puede ser positiva o negativa. Las características e intereses
de las fuentes de información y de los propios medios, condicionan la calidad
