B. SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION
1. SUMMARY:
a. DECREASED LIBIDO (6.4%), IMPOTENCE (8.1%), and decreased volume of
ejaculate (3.7%) have been reported in patients receiving 5 milligrams of
finasteride daily for 12 months (Prod Info Proscar(R), 2004). In a 4-year,
randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 3040 men with
benign prostatic hyperplasia, therapy with finasteride 5 milligrams daily
was associated with new drug-related sexual adverse events only during the
first year of therapy. In the majority of the patients, sexual adverse
events were mild to moderate and resolved in approximately 50% of men after
discontinuation of finasteride or placebo (Wessells et al, 2003).
b. In clinical studies for the treatment of male pattern hair loss, propecia
1 milligram was associated with decreased libido (1.8%), erectile
dysfunction (1.3%), and ejaculation disorder (1.2%). The incidence of each
of these side effects decreased to 0.3% or less by the fifth year of
treatment with Propecia(R) (Prod Info Propecia(R), 2004).
