Side Effects

The only important side effects of finasteride are related to sexual 
function. Reports of adverse events by the subjects of the phase 3 trial 
revealed decreased libido in 5.4 percent of men receiving finasteride and 
1.3 percent of those receiving placebo32. Impotence was reported by 4.3 
percent of men receiving finasteride and 1.7 percent of those receiving 
placebo. Although libido and potency have been assumed to be 
testosterone-mediated phenomena, these results suggest that at least some 
men may require dihydrotestosterone for normal sexual function. Finasteride 
has no effect on serum lipids54 or bone density58.
